The 2010 certification drive at NYIT was driven by a proposed pay cut of over 35%, as well as a feeling of disorganization at the school. While there was some division among the employees, the certification drive was ultimately successful. Since that time, the number of full-time faculty has increased from two to five, with an accompanying reduction in teaching opportunities for the adjunct faculty. There have also been numerous part-time and adjunct instructors hired.
While Local 5 is part of the union in good standing, there is currently no Collective Agreement in place.
