The Teachers at VEC organized themselves quickly in response to increasing privacy issues and job security concerns. On December 1, 2014 90% of teachers voted in favour of unionizing.
Teachers at Local 9 worked for over 18 month to negotiate a Collective Agreement, but reached an impasse with the employer in August 2016. Teachers went on strike (after an incredible 100% strike vote), picketed the school, and continued to attempt to reach an agreement. The employer agreed to mediation, but then suddenly closed the school on August 26, citing insolvency. ETEA is currently challenging the employers’ decision to close the school at the Labour Board on behalf of these former VEC teachers.
ETEA Local 9 is currently unassigned.
